Rescue Insignia (Donated by Mr. Chen Canpei)

During World War II, the Flying Tigers from the USA came to China to join the effort against Japan. The Kuomintang government commissioned a unique insignia, which served as a certificate of proof and identity to apply for aid, for members of the Flying Tigers unit. Usually sewn on the back or lining of clothes, it specified the pilot’s identity and required the Chinese military and civilians to provide aid and assistance. If pilots survived crashes or parachuted to safety, this insignia would help them overcome the language barrier and be instantly recognized by local militia and civilians, thus receiving relief.
